Emory Tate’s cause of death was reported as a heart attack, which occurred suddenly during a chess tournament in Milpitas, California, on October 17, 2015. Despite efforts from participants and emergency services, he passed away shortly after collapsing at the tournament venue.
Yesterday, in the third round of a Bay Area event, he passed out. I was lost in my thoughts, not realizing that my opponent had made a sacrifice I had not anticipated, when Tate emerged from the loo, staggering, yelling, “We need an ambulance!” and tripping. Most folks ignored the 911 call because there wasn’t much else we could do until the EMTs arrived and told us to go.
Once he was brought out of the building, play resumed, but after that it was nearly hard to focus on anything. I will always remember that.
